60 Days and Counting...

Kids and Volunteers, let's talk games.

Traditionally we have done capture the flag, SQUIRT, and dodge ball (a favorite). Of course, we finish the week with our track race. Korfball was also a game we did in '05.

This is your time to write your suggestions for new games this year or make the argument for why we should keep certain games.

Possible suggestions for new games have included an obstacle course; freeze tag, and soccer like game.

Share we us what games we should have this year for our Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians teams to compete in. Leave a comment!

An obstacle course sounds fun...I always enjoyed those at Celebration. Also, a game like octopus or stone or sharks and minnows could be fun, but I don't know how you'd divide the kids up to play that.

Ultimate frisbee! With a football or something a little softer and easier to throw for the kids. Ultimate frisbee is a game like football but with a little twist. The objective is to score as many points as possible by passing around a frisbee or football. If you have the ball, you cannot run around with it. Each person on a team has to pass it to another teammate and when you catch it you have to stay where you are then pass to another teammate. But if you drop it the other team automatically gets the ball. The other team can try to block the ball and if they knock it down they get the ball. And when you catch the ball in the end zone or goal, your team gets a point.
You keep doing this for about 5 to 10 minutes then the game is over.
I think this would be a great group game and none of the kids would have to wait for there turn to play.

I totally agree with Anna. Obstacle courses are lots of fun!

I think that Squirt needs to go. I is time for a change :)

I'd have to agree with anna too...I loved the obstacle courses at celebration! :]

Squirt needs to go. All the girls on my team last year and the year before were always to scared to get wet!

Yeah I loved the obstacle courses too. I also liked the air ball. It was like soccer but you could run with it for three seconds. Then there was this other game that was like ultimate Frisbee with a soccer ball.

Lemme break the trend here and say that I loved Squirt. I'd like to see it stay.
Obstacle courses would be fun, though. I'm not sure how Ultimate could be done with so many kids.

We should put in some obstacle courses definitely. And how do you even play squirt? Because on such a hot day, it might be nice to get cooled down by water. ;)

(Sorry that I don't know how to play squirt y'all...this is my first year helping)

I say bring back korf ball.... that had loads of funness ;)

I think that squirt should definitely stay. I know what you mean, though, with some people (mostly girls) who don't want to get wet.
I agree that Korfball should come back, probably not for the 7-8 year olds though.
I don't think we should take any game away, but adding one game would be good. Since there's always a day when the kids repeat a game (I think), this would work.
Whatever we do I think will be great!

I agree with Jeanette.

How do you even play Korf ball? Isn't that the one kind of like basketball?

I am thinking a good old-fashioned game of kickball would be in order

I think we should keep all the games from last year. I personally never enjoyed the obstacle courses at Celebration, so I vote no on that, but it could be just that I was so clumsy. Kickball is very fun, but most of the kids could probably not do it. I like the idea of the backboard modification to dodgeball.

What about relay races? Or three-legged races? Or sack races? You could have a single "event" which was made up of 2 or 3 different kinds of races - short races, not like the long one at the end of camp.

Elizabeth Kelley said...

I'm lost on Korfball, too,because I wasn't there on year 1.
Squirt is pretty much volleyball, but it's played with large sponges and you're allowed to catch the ball, since you can't really hit a sponge full of water over the net.

Squirt sounds so fun! I don't think we should cut that this year.

How about having one of the games be gravel (or woodchips or whatever you like to call it) on the playground?

Anonymous said...

gravel would be fun, its just that i bet a lot of the kids would get hurt, cheat, get into fights, etc...

i think korfball should def def come back. i loved it when i played.

Daniel Garay said...

korfball should really stay. kenzie, you're probably right about gravel not being all the great. i say we should keep squirt. i don't know about the obstacle course, i never really liked playing that at celebration anyway. but i really think anna s. hit the jackpot for relay races. relay races all the way! i mean, what's not to like about it?

Anonymous said...

Okay, so it seems that a majority of the populus wants Korfball and Squirt to stay. A number of people also want Relay Races to come in, but not Gravel or Obstacle Courses. Am I following everyone?

Relay Races are a great idea, especially because there are many different variations of them and you don't have to just do the same one over and over.

Sounds right to me, Kelsey.

We could pass water balloons. :):):)

yeah, good idea!

I was thinking it would be a cool idea if on one day we had a huge scavenger hunt around the church! Although, the team would have to stay together, because we do NOT want anyone getting lost. Which might be a bit of an inconvenience, because one could be wanting to go one way, the other kid the other way....
Maybe the buddy system and each group of two have a helper? It depends on how many kids are on each whole team. It's just a thought.....

How about kickball? That would be a way to use the baseball field, it doesn't require a ton of skill, and it would allow for large teams of kids. Either the ref could pitch, or a captain from one of the teams.

Daniel Garay said...

that sounds like it would be fun.

Good Idea Anna. :)

I didn't read all those comments, but I always loved obstacle course in celebration years ago. I would not do a freeze tag kind of game because kids don't seem to be honest, or the honest ones see others who aren't being honest and it can become a very challenging situation. Oh, and I liked squirt because it cooled the kids off:)

If we keep Squrit, I don't think we should do the water balloon toss this year. I think it would be best if we only had one major water game.

Kickball sounds fun!

Hey Guys! Wow GAMES!! I'm excited (and you're thinking: "Yeah Chare, when AREN'T you excited about Summer Celebration?!?) Good point! Anyways, you guys are getting so good at talking about the point! Props. KK back to camp: If you find you're kids don't like squirt because they get wet, and you're ok with getting soaked, challenge them to "get you" with the sponges. This builds team spirit, memories, and by the end of it, if you put up a good struggle, they'll be just as wet as you are!! GO GALATIANS!!

Just another quick-quick reminder: You have to keep in mind that these are 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 year olds. Motor skill are only just being formed at some levels! Simple catch games like Squirt are GREAT even if we find them not so challenging. I think relay races that have one more level as you go up in age are cool.

Like: 6 Year olds- Run out around cone and back. 7 Yrs - Run out play hopscotch and back. 8 Yrs - Run out, play hopscotch, spin with bat on forehead in three circles, back. 9 + 10 Yrs - Run out, play hopscotch, spin with bat on forehead in three circles, walk backwards around a cone, and back.

GO GALATIANS!!

Well after reading Emma's letter in the other post, it looks like squirt was popular. Perhaps instead of replacing it with a different game, we could just add a game so that people would do a different game every day. (A couple years ago my team ended up playing dodgeball 3 times, because they were scheduled to play it twice, and then it rained one day. This got boring for them.)

Elizabeth Kelley said...

Yeah. Kickball sounds good to me!

Anonymous said...

I don't think kickball is the way to go. Kickball can take a while, and participation is limited with one person at bat.
Also, Squirt has already been removed I believe. Mr. B did say that Squirt wasn't going to be at S.C.08.
And Anna, what is your plan exactly for the relay races? Please be specific.

Oh, and this might be a crazy idea and completely bogus, but could we possibly do Substitute again? That game was a ton of fun, but it did take some time...
For those of you who don't know, substitute was a game we played in the 4-6 grade thing at Celebration. 5 guys and 5 girls were picked at random. They lined up on stage, and imaginary "crimes" were read to them. They then were read their "punishment". (ex.: You didn't clean tour room when your mom told you to, and, as punishment, you have to ________" fill in the blank with some crazy thing). The catch was that you could call up the Substitute to do it for you, if you didn't want to take the punishment (The substitute was some crazy adult who didn't mind doing all this odd stuff). It was a game designed to help beat into our heads the Gospel and the substitution of Christ.

Just an idea.. we probably don't have time for it, but it would be so much fun!

My idea for kickball (to allow all kids a chance at bat) would be like the Gaithersburg sports teams - instead of 3 outs to an inning, it's just that each person gets a chance to go before roles are swapped. And I think there'd be plenty of time for each team to get through once, though maybe not more than that.

As for relay races, it would be like someone said earlier: younger kids would just run, slightly older kids would have to do something at the end like jumping jacks or something, and then the oldest kids would do something crazier, like put their head on a wiffle-ball bat and spin around.

I LOVE the idea of substitute! What a great visual lesson for the gospel! As an "adult" who will probably be called upon to defend the honor of the Galatians team, I am totally PRO this idea. WOOT! GO GALATIANS!!

Anonymous said...

I don't think that the obstacle courses would be very fun, though. I hated them when I was younger, and so did almost everyone else my age.

And Galatian fan, who are you?
